A World Model from a Single Act

Marcus Schmieke, the developer of TimeWaver, published a book in 2026 that is more ambitious than anything he has released before. It attempts to derive the world from a single movement: the act of distinguishing. This page tells you what is in it — in plain language, and with a clear mark wherever the model holds and wherever it reaches its limit.
What Marcus Schmieke has put forward
“The Architecture of Distinction” is neither a self-help book nor a creed. It is an attempt at derivation: 390 pages setting out, step by step, how a single basic operation is meant to give rise in turn to quantum mechanics, space and time, gravitation, the constituents of matter, cosmology — and finally life and consciousness.
That single basic operation is distinction. Marking one thing off from another. Drawing a boundary where none was before. Schmieke draws on the logician George Spencer-Brown for this and places himself in a recognisable tradition: Kant's question of what any experience presupposes, Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker's reconstruction of physics from elementary alternatives, John Wheeler's conjecture that the physical world issues from yes-or-no decisions.
He sums the book up in one line himself: one act, one equation, three readings. For our purposes the third reading is the interesting one — the one concerned with life, mind and self.
The same structure, read three times
The most surprising move in the book, for me, is not its beginning but its thrift. When Schmieke passes from physics to life and on to consciousness, he introduces no new principle. He takes the same equation and reads it one level up.
Mind
One level higher still, what circulates is what a system assumes about itself — its own estimate of its own state.
Life
One level up, what circulates is a system's order: no longer particles, but the coherence by which something maintains itself.
Matter
At the lowest level, distinction unfolds itself — yielding, in order, the structures of physics.
What separates life from mere order
Here the model becomes concrete, and it offers an image I have not been able to shake since reading it.
Picture two things in a stream. A puddle in a hollow: water lies in it, and if you marked a drop it would stay put. And a whirlpool: it holds its shape just as steadily, for hours — but in the opposite way. It holds it by never letting a single drop come to rest.
From the outside the two look identical: a shape that does not change. The difference lies entirely beneath. And stop the current, and the whirlpool is gone at once — although not one molecule of water is missing.

Order at rest. A crystal is as ordered as anything can be — and dead.

Order that never stands still. The shape persists precisely because the substance never does.
Life is not the pattern. It is the flow that holds the pattern up.
For work with people this is more than a pretty image. It shifts the question. Not: what shape has someone settled into? But: what is actually holding that shape up — and what happens when that changes?
And what separates mind from life
Schmieke takes the next step just as sparingly. A whirlpool sustains itself without knowing anything of itself. A bacterium circulates without holding a picture of its circulating. For mind to arise, this model requires no greater complexity but a second layer: no longer the state itself, but what a system assumes about its state.
And then comes the condition that turns the whole thing into something usable. That inner assumption counts only if it actually moves something — if it changes behaviour. An assumption that merely rides along and never intervenes is, in the model's terms, no assumption at all.
Every ship has a position. Not every ship has a chart. And a chart in a drawer steers nothing.
The image is Schmieke's, and it captures something that turns up in coaching daily. Driftwood has a position and no chart — it goes where the current takes it. A ship has both: a chart marked with its presumed position, and a helm that gets turned because of that chart.
What matters is not that the chart exists. What matters is that it is read, and that someone then puts a hand on the helm. That is precisely the difference between an insight you have and an insight that changes something.
The twelve fields — and why there are twelve
At one point the book becomes immediately concrete for work with TimeWaver. To describe the order of a living system, Schmieke works with twelve coupled domains that influence one another and fall into four groups. Anyone who knows the Quantum Longevity module will recognise here the theoretical origin of the twelve life fields.
What I find remarkable is how Schmieke handles this himself. He writes explicitly that the number twelve does not follow from his equation. It is a modelling choice — a sensible, workable division, but not a derived necessity. What carries is the structure, not the number.
That is exactly the kind of precision I want from someone putting forward such a model. It would have been easy for him to sell the twelve as a law of nature.
Where the model reaches its limit
The book does something I have rarely seen in this field: it marks every single claim by how it came about — derived, constructed, posited, or merely inferred as the best available explanation. There is even a dedicated ledger in the appendix, so that criticism knows where to press.
And at the start of the part on life, mind and self, Schmieke writes expressly that these chapters do not carry the same evidential standing as the physics before them. There, derivations answer to experiment; here, structure answers to coherence. He gives two reasons: so that the physics cannot be attacked through the metaphysics — and so that the metaphysics is never mistaken for physics.
On consciousness he stays just as exact. The so-called hard problem — why experience feels like anything at all — is not solved by this, he says. It is given a precise address and left open. At the decisive point he calls his own step an inference to the best explanation, not a derivation.
The Vedic thread
For anyone familiar with the Vedic worldview, the book holds a surprise. Schmieke maps the three components of his equation onto the three gunas — the three basic qualities of Sāṅkhya philosophy: circulation to sattva, clarity; directed striving to rajas, craving; blurring to tamas, veiling.
He even reads the Nāsadīya hymn of the Rig Veda against his model — that famous passage saying that then there was neither being nor non-being. And he records what this comparison is not: not a confirmation of one by the other, but a striking convergence of two very different ways of describing.
Why I am showing this
I have worked since 2011 with the technology that grew out of this research, and have been a certified TimeWaver trainer ever since. Over the years I have met many people who use the device without ever having seen the thinking it comes from.
The model on this page is not mine. It is Marcus Schmieke's work, developed over decades and set out in full for the first time in this book. I present it here because I think it only fair to disclose the foundation I work on — including the places where it is expressly not proven.
